Owner Training Academy

Empowerment, Education, and Ethical Support

The Owner Training Academy was created for individuals who want to be actively involved in training their own service dog, without being left to navigate a complex, unregulated industry alone.

Owner training can be powerful when done correctly. It can also be overwhelming, unsafe, or ineffective when guidance is inconsistent or unqualified. Too often, handlers are given fragments of information, conflicting advice, or unrealistic expectations, placing both the dog's welfare and the handler's independence at risk.

This academy exists to change that.

What Owner Training Means at Nose For Success

Owner training does not mean doing it by yourself.

At Nose For Success, owner training means:

  • Structured, science-based education
  • Professional oversight and documentation
  • Ethical decision-making grounded in welfare
  • Clear benchmarks for progression
  • Consistent support from qualified trainers

You are the handler, but you are never unsupported.

Who the Owner Training Academy Is For

The Owner Training Academy is designed for individuals who:

  • Require a service dog and want hands-on involvement in training
  • Value ethical, welfare-first practices
  • Want transparency, structure, and professional accountability
  • Are committed to meeting public access and task training standards
  • Understand that service dog training is a long-term investment

Owner training is not a shortcut. It is a commitment, and we take that commitment seriously.

A Structured, Defensible Program

Our academy follows the same training standards, documentation, and ethical framework used in our program service dog training.

Each team receives:

  • A customized training plan based on handler needs and dog assessment
  • Clear milestones for obedience, task work, and public access skills
  • Welfare monitoring and behavior assessments
  • Ongoing evaluation to ensure the dog is suitable for service work

Progression is earned, documented, and individualized.

Science-Based, Welfare-First Training

All Owner Training Academy programs operate under the LIMA framework (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive).

This means:

  • Training begins with the least intrusive, most humane methods
  • Techniques are selected based on the dog's learning history and emotional state
  • Welfare, stress levels, and long-term soundness are continuously evaluated

No rigid formulas. No trend-based methods. No shortcuts.

Education for the Human Half of the Team

A successful service dog team requires an educated handler.

Owner Training Academy participants receive education in:

  • Canine learning theory and behavior fundamentals
  • Reading canine body language and stress signals
  • Public access standards and ADA compliance
  • Task training foundations and proofing
  • Handling skills and reinforcement timing
  • Injury prevention and conditioning for working dogs

Knowledge builds confidence, and confidence builds reliable teams.

Professional Support & Accountability

All Owner Training Academy clients work under the guidance of qualified Nose For Success trainers.

Our trainers:

  • Hold recognized, science-based certifications (CCPDT, IAABC, KPA-CTP or equivalent)
  • Maintain current Canine & Feline CPR and First Aid certification
  • Are background checked and insured
  • Participate in mandatory continuing education

Training decisions are documented, transparent, and defensible.

Technology-Driven Communication

Owner training should never feel like guesswork.

Participants receive:

  • Access to our secure training platform
  • Regular progress tracking and updates
  • Clear feedback on training videos and assignments
  • Ongoing communication with their training team

You always know where you stand, and what comes next.

Realistic Expectations, Honest Outcomes

Not every dog is suited for service work, and we are transparent about that.

If a dog demonstrates limitations that impact welfare or reliability, we address it honestly and early. Our priority is not labels. It is ethical outcomes for both dog and handler.

That honesty protects everyone involved.
